Meet our Ocean Mates. Each mate has their own unique quirks and stories that make them great. Their role in our crew is to educate, excite and provide wise words of wisdom to our volunteers.

Percy the Penguin

Percy is an extroverted penguin who is passionate about the environment and teaching others about how they can help. Being a penguin, she believes that team-work makes the dream work. She has a young, positive attitude.

Garry the Blue Groper

Blue Groper

Gender:

Male

Garry is a wise old groper. He will cruise around in the blue water but loves to give advice to anyone who needs it. When he sees a lot of rubbish in the oceans, he gets sad and because of his poor vision sometimes he mistakes plastic for food and eats it. This makes his stomach really sore and upset.

“Help me feel less blue,

join our clean up crew”

Tom the Turtle

Green Turtle

Tom is a laid-back teenage loggerhead turtle with a cool vibe. He loves adventure and cruising new areas of the ocean but not when it’s littered with rubbish. He wants to spread awareness of the importance of environmental conservation for his planet.

Peggy the Pelican

Peggy is a positive pelican who unfortunately lost her leg when it got tangled in a plastic bag. This doesn’t stop her doing all the things she loves and is the advocate for inclusivity in the crew. She is a foster mum for a little fish who no longer has a family.

Shaun the Shark

Port Jackson Shark

Shaun is a lone wolf, he loves his own company and chilling on the ocean floor. Shaun gets really angry when he comes across plastic in his ocean which is why he joined the Ocean Mates. Being a realist he isn’t the most optimistic in the group but he knows that every piece of rubbish he picks up is one less piece in his home.

Carmen the Cuttlefish

Non-Binary

Carmen is a curious cuttlefish who identifies as non-binary. They are quiet but inquisitive and really smart. They are able to change colour and shape to hide from prey but cannot hide from the rubbish around them.
