BREAKING NEWS! The NSW state parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of the laws we have been fighting for, enacting a ban on single-use plastics starting next year.
From 1 June 2022, lightweight plastic shopping bags will finally be banned in NSW, the only state who still allows them. Plastic bags are one of the most lethal plastics for ocean wildlife, entangling seabirds and choking turtles who mistake them for jellyfish. From 1 November 2022, the following single-use plastics will also be banned: Cutlery Straws Drink stirrers Polystyrene food / drink containers Cotton buds Microbeads Disposable plates and bowls Incredibly, a last minute amendment to ban plastic plates and bowls was successful - thanks to sustained pressure from ocean lovers! All of your calls and emails added up, convincing politicians to get rid of these difficult to recycle plastics. With our victory, NSW will go from being laggard to leader, with one of the most comprehensive bans on single-use plastics in the country.
