Northern Beaches Clean Up Crew

Microplastics

15/2/2022

Some of Sydney’s favourite harbour beaches suffer very high levels of plastic pollution, prompting concerns for the safety of swimmers in the area.
The most poorly rated beaches included Manly Cove, with an average of 4051 microplastics per square metre, according to data from the Australian Microplastic Assessment Project. Whiting Beach at Mosman (792), Watsons Bay (781), Newport Beach (333) and Foreshore Beach (316) were rated as having high levels of microplastic waste.
Dr Wilson, who is AUSMAP research director and an honorary senior research fellow at Macquarie University, said the data showed the widespread distribution of microplastics in waterways, potentially impacting the health of aquatic environments. “With plastics not breaking down but continuing to fragment over time, it means that a range of organisms, from plankton through to whales, may be potentially exposed to them”.
Microplastics are less than five millimetres in size and can be items such as plastic resin pellets and microbeads from facial scrubs, or fragments of plastic products washed into gutters and then waterways.

Say hello to Lionel's neighbour Ken. He joined Lionel for the morning low tide where they spotted spotted 3 bikes and one Franklin's trolley. They thought it would be hard to get it out but they won!

A huge thank you to the lovely crew member Kate who tackled "Little Manly" on her own, this afternoon. You're such an inspiration and legend and we're all very grateful for what you do.

What unusal items have you found?

What some of the unusual items you have found on a beach clean up? The Northern Beaches Clean Up Crew have found a shark strangled to death by an elastic in Dee Why, a dinosaur suit in Freshwater, a bicycle in Curl Curl Lagoon and on a Mona Vale beach clean up we found ice crampons. What unusual items have you found on a beach?

Check out these legends - this is what they cleaned up in just under two hours. What a fantastic effort. "What you makes a DIFFERENCE, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." ~ Jane Goodall

We miss you!

Remember when we could all meet up and clean up beaches together? That was fun. We miss finding all weird stuff like sofas, dinosaurs suits and exercise bikes. We miss dirty hands, big smiles and all of us working together. We miss swearing when we find dead animals entangled in abandoned fishing lines and plastic. We miss our laughs, craziness and great conversations. We miss seeing the joy when the kids find more dirty toys to keep. We miss seeing how dirty and muddy we get just so we can get "that" piece of plastic. We miss seeing all smiles telling us how many pieces of Styrofoam balls that have been picked up "just in that corner". We miss seeing faces finding a dirty t-shirt and saying "I'll take it home and wash it and it will be just like new". We miss you helping us trying to pack everything in the trailer. We miss the conversations we have at lunch after our clean ups. We miss our friends. We miss YOU!

Plastic never goes away

6/3/2021

Picture
Is this your wrapper? Mars bar wrapper with the best before date 1994 found this week at Queenscliff beach.
The vast majority of debris in the ocean — about 75 percent of it — is made of plastic. It can consist of anything from plastic bottles to packaging materials, but whatever form it takes, it doesn't go away easily. While plastic may break down into smaller and smaller pieces, some as small as grains of sand, these pieces are never truly biodegradable. The plastic bits, some small enough that they're called microplastics, threaten marine life like fish, birds and turtles. Up to 95% of some populations of birds have plastic in their gut.
We can clean up beaches every day for the rest of our lives. But it's a little bit like trying to mop the floor up in your bathroom. If the bath is overflowing and both taps in the bath and the shower are all running at full speed, it's a waste of time trying to just clean up. You will need to clean up eventually but the first thing is to stem the flow. And that has to be the priority. Say no to single use plastic.

"It's not as clean as it looks like at first glance" - common comment from first time crew members. This is from our clean up at Dee Why lagoon. So much plastic.

Shelly beach clean up

1/8/2020

Picture
People often say to us: "Why clean up Shelly Beach, it's always clean there!" Last time we cleaned up Shelly Beach (which is closest to the aquatic reserve Cabbage Tree Bay) we picked up 594 cigarette butts, 644 food wraps, 595 bits of plastic bags, 255 glass bottles, 427 lids, 74 plastic bottles, 1 couch, 3 chairs, 1 trolley, 1 garden hose, a poster from the old Manly council (it changed to Northern Beaches Council in May 2016) and an injured seagull (fishing line). Every little thing helps - plastic breaks down to smaller pieces and can be mistaken as food by both land and ocean animals. It can entangled and injure and slowly kill animals such as the bandicoots and sea turtles living in this area. Littered cigarette butts leach toxic chemicals into the environment and can contaminate water. The toxic exposure can poison fish, as well as animals who eat cigarette butts. We would like to thank all crew members and everyone else who picks up rubbish on their way 🙏
